The
idea that people might imitate behaviour they have seen in the
mass media is strongly diffused. It has had a great success among many
scholars, even if the model is
often based on studies with misapplied methodology and is not grounded
in theory. The reasons why are a lot. Here you can find an article by David
Gauntlett (in his website) about "Ten things wrong with the media 'effects' model". I agree with Gauntlett's analysis; so, please, read it.
